Birthday Party Entertainment Tips

by Presto Joe: Magic Genius!

Looking for great kids party entertainment? Whether you’re hiring a magician, clown, princess, or puppeteer, these tips will help you avoid headaches and hassles while saving you time and money.

1. Keep the Birthday Entertainment Under 45 Minutes

Attention spans aren’t as long as you may think. A good birthday party magician will have a show that runs between 30 – 45 minutes. I don’t suggest anything longer, as younger children will have difficulty paying attention.

2. If You Want More Than 45 Minutes… Add Variety

If you want birthday party entertainment that lasts an hour or longer, make sure the kids entertainer can add variety. For instance, a clown might add balloon twisting or face painting after their show.

As a birthday magician, I offer a 20-minute magic lesson after my show. This gives the parents some extra time to themselves, while I teach the kids some easy magic they can do.

3. Different Ages Require Different Kids Party Entertainment

It’s a fact: What entertains a 5-year-old will not entertain a 12-year-old. Some kids entertainers specialize in very young children, while others are a better fit for older kids and teenagers.

Try to find birthday party entertainment that is ideal for your child’s age group. Don’t forget to tell your party entertainer the age range of the kids, so the entertainer can tailor the show perfectly. This is especially important for DJs… who will need to bring age-appropriate music.

4. Children Love to Participate

Entertainers for kids parties know that audience participation is very important. Kids LOVE being a part of the show. Make sure your entertainer gets the kids involved!

5. Indoors is Best

Having a kids party outdoors can create many problems with wind, weather, noise pollution, etc. If you’re planning an outdoor party, have a back-up plan in case of bad weather.

6. Have Entertainment Before the Cake & Presents

It’s best to have a show either right before food is served, or in-between food and cake. This is great for 3 reasons:

1. Any children who arrive late or must leave early will still enjoy the show.
2. Parents can relax in the middle of the party and catch their breath.
3. You can set up the cake and candles while the show is going on.

If you must have cake before the show, have some games immediately follow the cake. That will give you 20-30 minutes to let the kids burn off the sugar high, and get them in the right mindset for the entertainment.

7. Timing is Everything

Schedules can quickly get out of hand. Try to make sure the kids are seated and ready to watch the show at the agreed-upon time. Entertainers for birthday parties often have many shows per day, and they’ll need to be on time to the next party.

If your party is running extremely late, some entertainers may need to cut the show early to make it to their next party on time. Ask beforehand how much time your performer
allows for between shows.

8. How to Find Great Entertainment

The best way to find great kids party entertainment is to ask other moms and dads. Most of my shows come from referrals. But if that doesn’t work, try Google!

Once you’ve found some websites, look for the following:

  • Performance clips on the website
  • Testimonials from parents & kids organizations
  • A professional image

Ask yourself this: Does this person look like somebody I’d want in my home?

9. Save Time, Choose Three Entertainers

You can drive yourself crazy getting quotes from a dozen different performers. Choose the three you think look like the best fit, and then call and ask them about their shows.

You’ll want to ask them:

  • How much experience do they have?
  • What makes their show great for kids?
  • What is in the show, and how long is it?
  • Can they entertain your specific age group?
  • Do they offer a money-back guarantee?
  • Do they carry liability insurance?

Once you know these details, you can be confident you’re comparing apples to apples, and you can hire an entertainer with confidence!

10. Book Early, Whenever Possible

If you’re planning a party for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, book your entertainment as early as possible. Most entertainers for childrens’ birthday parties fill up their weekends far in advance. Good luck!!!
